AI content detector apps flag plagiarism and rephrased content
We all strive to produce content that’s compelling, and well written. And now that we’re using AI content tools that have made content creation infinitely easier, what about the ethics?
But they’ve also made it easier for plagiarism to flourish
Can AI content detection systems stay ahead of this? Are we setting ourselves up to be always one step ahead or behind the applications that detect plagiarism with responsible AI? This is an ethics problem that really hasn’t been adequately addressed yet, and the issue is surfacing as schools, businesses and government agencies set standards for original content—that which is generated by humans–not by machines.
AI content tools and ethics
AI content detection tools are software programs that use artificial intelligence to assist with various aspects of content creation. After we enter our topic and keywords, the AI writing assistant generates text. AI content writers generate articles based on this information. We are to assume that the article is plagiarism-free.
Not so fast
These AI articles are drafts and need a lot of work before they’re ready for primetime. There’s duplication. There are no examples, data, case studies or personal experience that make our writing compelling.
For my AI content, I delete some of the garbage and go back and start updating the drafts. This is where I might get flagged for plagiarism.
Plagiarism means that it only needs to resemble the original
It’s important to know that search engines identify plagiarism as information that resembles the original—it doesn’t have to be identical to the original phrasing to still be regarded as plagiarism. You can’t change a few words and think that it’s now plagiarism-free. It’s not. It’s stealing.
